Frequentis and France’s air navigation service provider DSNA have put a new voice communication system into full operation at Brest Area Control Centre. The system, supplied under the FABEC voice communication system programme, replaces the long-serving ARTEMIS platform and supports air traffic control across western France after receiving regulatory approval.
The installation uses Frequentis’s VCS3020X platform, configured to DSNA requirements and developed with EUROCONTROL’s Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre. Brest is the second centre to enter service under the programme, following Maastricht, and the system first underwent trial operation in October 2023 before formal approval from the French civil aviation authority in April 2025.
Frequentis and DSNA described the new setup as improving safety, resilience, coordination and communication continuity for air traffic operations in the region. The programme is designed to provide more flexible air traffic management across France and Europe, while replacing equipment that had been in service for almost 30 years.
