Frankfurt noise panel reviews Cindy-S route as municipalities voice concern

Frankfurt Airport’s noise commission is reviewing monitoring results for the new Cindy-S flight route on Wednesday, as the procedure remains under scrutiny more than a year after entry into service. Introduced in July 2025, the route was designed to reduce aircraft noise over parts of Darmstadt, including Kranichstein, Arheilgen and Weiterstadt-Gräfenhausen, but the latest assessment points to higher noise levels in Erzhausen, Egelsbach and northern Darmstadt-Wixhausen.

The findings have drawn criticism from affected municipalities around Germany’s busiest airport, where route design and noise distribution remain politically sensitive. The commission, which represents municipalities in the Frankfurt Airport area, is expected to reach a decision at the beginning of December.

Cindy-S was intended to shift traffic patterns and ease pressure on communities most exposed to departures and arrivals in the southern approach and departure network. Instead, the monitoring work has highlighted a redistribution of noise rather than a clear reduction, leaving local authorities divided over whether the current routing delivers the intended relief. The commission’s December decision is likely to shape further operational discussion around the route.
