Frankfurt Airport Suspends New Sky Line Train to Terminal 3 Weeks After Launch

Frankfurt Airport’s new Sky Line automated people mover linking Terminal 3 to Terminals 1 and 2 has been taken out of service just weeks after entering commercial operation. Airport operator Fraport announced on 27 May 2026 that the new Line 2 is suspended until further notice to allow necessary technical inspections and system-wide adjustments.

The shutdown affects the recently opened connection that was designed as the main high-capacity link between the new Terminal 3, the existing terminals and the airport’s regional and long-distance rail stations. The 5.6-kilometer driverless line was intended to carry up to 4,000 passengers per hour in each direction, with a journey time of around eight minutes and a peak frequency of about every two minutes using 12 bi-car automated trainsets supplied by Siemens Mobility.

During the interruption, passenger transfers between terminals are handled by shuttle buses, running at intervals of roughly three to five minutes. Travel times to and from Terminal 3 can exceed 20 minutes during periods of heavy congestion. The legacy Sky Line link between Terminals 1 and 2 continues to operate for connecting passengers; only the new Line 2 to Terminal 3 is affected.

Fraport states it is working to restore service as quickly as possible. A resumption date has not been set and will depend on clearance from the German Federal Railway Authority, which must approve any technical or software corrections before operations restart.
