Former German government Airbus A340 section bound for Berlin museum

The forward section of former German government Airbus A340-300 16+01 “Konrad Adenauer” is being preserved for display at the Military History Museum of the German Armed Forces at Berlin-Gatow airfield. Lufthansa Technik is providing the approximately 30-metre-long section on loan, with a purchase option, including the cockpit and original government cabin used by senior officials.

The nearly six-metre-wide, 25-tonne section contains two conference rooms and a private office. It began its journey from Teruel in Spain, where the aircraft was dismantled for parts recovery, and is travelling by sea to Hamburg before continuing via inland waterways and overland transport to Berlin. Arrival is expected in late October or early November 2026.

The museum plans to incorporate the component into a future permanent exhibition, although no public opening date has been announced. The display is intended to examine the aircraft as a tangible example of German foreign and security policy, including the use of air power as a political instrument in historical comparison.

The A340 served with Germany’s government flight service from 2011 until its retirement at the end of 2023. Lufthansa Technik subsequently reacquired the aircraft and sent it to Teruel, preserving the forward upper-fuselage section because of its historical significance.
