Drone sightings force temporary closure of Luxembourg Airport

Luxembourg Airport suspended flight operations on the evening of 18 September after visual sightings of unidentified drones over Findel, diverting 19 flights to other airports before service resumed at about 1:20 a.m. on 19 September. The shutdown affected passenger and cargo movements at one of the country’s main air links and triggered precautionary safety checks by airport authorities.

The government described the closure as a preventive measure under established safety protocols to protect passengers, crews, airport staff and aircraft. Two inspections found no immediate aviation-safety risk, allowing operations to restart overnight. Authorities have not yet reached a conclusion on the drones’ origin and are continuing their investigation.

Reuters reported that the disruption affected more than 1,800 passengers, while RTL said Luxair accounted for 17 of the diverted flights. Diversions were sent to airports including Cologne/Bonn, Brussels, Frankfurt-Hahn, Liège, Paris, Basel and Strasbourg, with KLM and Air Dolomiti among the carriers affected.
