Japan Airlines (JAL) and Fukuoka International Airport Co. have begun Level 4 autonomous towing-tractor operations at Fukuoka Airport, extending the airline’s driverless airside logistics programme beyond the Tokyo area. The electric vehicles will carry cargo containers along a 1.7-kilometre route between the domestic cargo terminal and a ground-support-equipment holding area, making Fukuoka the third airport in JAL’s domestic network to use the technology.
The operation uses the EZTow tractor manufactured by TLD Robotics, formerly known as TractEasy. Each vehicle is 3.20 metres long, 1.84 metres wide and 2.05 metres high, with a weight of 4.07 tonnes and a maximum towing capacity of 14 tonnes. The route can accommodate up to six connected cargo units and takes about 10 minutes to complete.
JAL and FIAC established joint operating rules and upgraded infrastructure along the route to support driverless movements under specified conditions. The vehicles are remotely monitored and use GPS and obstacle-detection systems. The programme addresses rising passenger and cargo demand at Fukuoka Airport, as well as labour shortages in ground handling, while reducing the work required for cargo transport and the risk of driving-related errors.
The initial operation uses one vehicle, with approximately three more planned by the end of the financial year. JAL is also considering extending autonomous transport to passenger baggage and working with All Nippon Airways on wider airport automation.
