Severe weather forced Ibiza Airport to suspend operations twice on Sunday, disrupting domestic and international flights and initially causing five cancellations and 16 diversions. Airport operator Aena halted activity from 10:00 to 11:00 and again from 11:15 to 12:15 local time as intense rainfall and standing water created safety concerns on the airfield. Operations resumed after drainage work was completed.
The disruption was linked to Storm Adam, which brought heavy rain to the Balearic Islands and triggered weather warnings for Ibiza and Formentera. The five cancellations and 16 diversions recorded during the shutdown period covered events between 10:00 and 12:15, rather than necessarily representing the final daily total.
Later reporting placed the accumulated figure at 27 cancellations by 19:00, while diversions remained at 16. The differing totals reflect separate reporting periods during the day.
The storm also affected airport facilities. Access to the P1 car park was temporarily closed after an awning collapsed, while one of the two access lanes serving the express-parking area was unavailable. Aena subsequently reported that operations had been restored, although disruption continued as airlines managed the effects on their schedules.
