Crop-spraying aircraft crashes into daycare grounds in Brazil; children unharmed

A crop-spraying aircraft crashed into the grounds of Cora Coralina daycare in Campo Verde, in Brazil’s Mato Grosso state, at about 14:30 local time on 23 October. The 28-year-old pilot was the only person injured; the daycare’s children and employees were unharmed. The aircraft came down at the rear of the facility, about 400 metres from the runway used for take-off. The cause remains under investigation.

The pilot was conscious when emergency crews found him and was taken to Hospital Municipal Coração de Jesus for treatment. The impact caused a fuel leak, prompting responders to secure the area and take precautions against fire. Police, civil defence, municipal mobility officials and representatives of the aircraft’s company also attended.

Local reports indicate that the aircraft struck an unused section of the daycare building and the roof of a nearby health unit. Municipal education officials said it was not carrying crop-protection chemicals. The daycare serves about 180 children, but the affected area was unoccupied. The Military Fire Department’s report did not identify the aircraft model or establish what caused the crash.
