Lufthansa prepares for final A340-600 flight as 17-year-old aircraft exits fleet

Lufthansa is scheduled to operate its final Airbus A340-600 passenger service on 18 October, ending nearly 23 years of flying the four-engine widebody. Flight LH419 is due to depart Washington Dulles International Airport at 17:55 local time and arrive in Frankfurt at 07:55 on 19 October, subject to operational changes. The retirement will remove the A340-600 from Lufthansa’s scheduled passenger fleet.

The final operation concerns the airline’s four remaining aircraft: D-AIHW, D-AIHX, D-AIHY and D-AIHZ. They are approximately 17 to 18 years old and have primarily served Lufthansa’s Frankfurt routes to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport and Washington Dulles.

Lufthansa introduced the A340-600 in 2003 and ultimately operated 24 aircraft. The last four are being withdrawn at the end of the 2026 summer schedule as part of the group’s fleet-modernisation strategy. The type’s higher operating costs, particularly compared with newer twin-engine widebodies, have accelerated its departure.

The retirement will not end Lufthansa’s use of four-engine passenger aircraft. Airbus A340-300s, A380s and Boeing 747s remain in the fleet, although the smaller A340-300 is expected to leave service by approximately 2027. The aircraft assigned to LH419 had not been independently confirmed at the time of reporting.
