US approves possible $2.1 billion sale of 500 Patriot missiles to Ukraine

The US State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to Ukraine of 500 Patriot PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement interceptors, with an estimated value of $2.1 billion. The proposed package also includes spare parts and logistics and programme support. Canada, Germany and Norway would contribute through the JUMPSTART programme, alongside Ukrainian national funds financed by the EU’s Ukraine Support Loan; no US funds are involved.

Lockheed Martin is the proposed sale’s principal contractor. The State Department described the package as intended to strengthen Ukraine’s integrated air and missile defences and sustain operations of its existing Patriot systems against ongoing aerial threats.

The approval is for a potential sale, not confirmation that the purchase is complete, and the State Department notice gives no delivery schedule. Reuters, citing two people briefed on the decision, reported that the interceptors have yet to be manufactured and are not expected to reach Ukraine until the early 2030s.
