A damaged perimeter fence at Leipzig/Halle Airport prompted a police search overnight and the temporary closure of the airport’s north runway. Investigators believe with a high degree of probability that a vehicle broke through the fence, although it remains unclear whether the incident was deliberate or accidental. The damaged section was near Russian Antonov cargo aircraft parked at the airport, while passenger and cargo operations continued via the south runway.
The breach was discovered shortly before 23:00 on 17 October beside a publicly accessible road. Federal and Saxony state police searched the airport grounds for unauthorised people, suspicious objects and evidence. No unauthorised persons or suspicious objects had been found during the initial operation, and further searches were planned on 18 October.
The north runway and flight operations on the northern side were suspended as a precaution. Leipzig/Halle Airport has two runways, allowing traffic to continue without reported restrictions to passenger or cargo services through the south runway and its logistics facilities.
The location was of particular security interest because several Russian Antonov An-124 freighters have remained at Leipzig/Halle since 2022 under European Union sanctions. Authorities had not confirmed an intruder, vehicle or suspicious object, and there was no established evidence of an attack or sabotage.
