Aena awards €19.6 million contract to renew Granada-Jaén Airport runway

Aena has awarded a €19.56 million contract to renew the runway at Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport in Spain. The project will be delivered by a joint venture between Matías Arrom Bibiloni (MAB) and Sampol over approximately 20 months, with most work scheduled at night to limit disruption. The runway will close for 21 days in May 2027 for critical construction activities.

The works include removing and replacing the existing runway pavement, increasing its thickness by 2.5 centimetres, and resurfacing the taxiways to improve structural capacity. At the runway thresholds, the existing rigid pavement will be demolished and rebuilt with flexible pavement.

The project also covers levelling the runway strip, building a new helicopter air-taxiway, applying hydroseeding around critical radio-navigation aid areas, and replacing the airfield and approach lighting systems with LED equipment.

Most construction will take place between 23:15 and 06:30, when the airport is normally closed to air traffic. The critical phase is provisionally scheduled to close the runway from 23:15 on 5 May 2027 until 06:30 on 27 May. During that period, traffic may operate through Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport. The investment forms part of Aena’s DORA III infrastructure programme for 2027–2031.
