Baros Maldives has developed from a basic island hotel opened in 1973 into a 75-villa luxury resort, according to a retrospective published on Thursday. Located about 20 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport in Malé, the resort offers a house reef and has modernised its villas, with a substantial refurbishment completed in 2020. The feature also records the resort’s ranking in the 2026 Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards: second worldwide and first in Asia.
The resort was established by the Maniku brothers. Its growth is traced through visits in 2013 and 2026, with staff describing the property and its guest experience. Nearly 30% of guests are repeat visitors, the feature reports.
Access from Malé is by speedboat rather than a separate scheduled air transfer. The short journey from the international airport places Baros among resorts within reach of the capital, although the feature does not provide airline, passenger-volume or wider aviation-market data. Its focus is the resort’s evolution and current offering, not a change in air services or airport operations.
