Volotea to shrink fleet by at least nine aircraft in restructuring

Volotea will reduce its fleet from 44 aircraft to 30-35 as part of a financial restructuring that also includes a planned capital increase and talks with creditors over longer-term debt terms. The Spanish low-cost carrier is preparing the changes while continuing normal operations and ticket sales, with the adjustment centred on Barcelona and likely to affect capacity across its network in France and Italy.

The fleet reduction implies at least nine aircraft will leave service, with the airline’s future fleet expected to be made up mostly of Airbus A320s. Volotea is also discussing repayment terms with Spain’s SEPI and other financial partners, aiming to reach an agreement by December.

The restructuring follows cost pressure linked in part to about €150 million in additional fuel expense. Reports also point to around 50 job cuts at the Barcelona headquarters, although the carrier has not identified specific routes, bases or aircraft to be withdrawn.
