Boeing has identified a newly discovered software issue on some 737 MAX aircraft that can disrupt automated navigation during a specific landing scenario after a missed approach. The problem emerged after a cockpit software update and could temporarily reduce access to automated flight guidance or vertical navigation when crews alter the planned flight path on a go-around.
Boeing informed 737 operators last month and is developing a software update to permanently correct the fault. The company has told operators the issue does not pose an immediate safety risk, while reinforcing existing pilot procedures for handling the affected scenario.
The Federal Aviation Administration is reviewing the matter and will convene a Corrective Action Review Board to decide whether immediate action is needed. The issue comes as Boeing seeks certification progress for the 737 MAX 7 and MAX 10, and the number of aircraft affected has not been made clear.
