Brussels Airport tests mobile SAF blending unit under Stargate programme

Brussels Airport has begun testing a mobile sustainable aviation fuel blending installation as part of its Stargate sustainability programme, becoming the first airport in Europe to trial the system. The pilot will run until the end of the year and is designed to let airlines request fuel blended on site with a higher SAF share, delivered to aircraft by tanker truck.

Skytanking handles fuel supply and aircraft fuelling at the airport, while the new setup is intended to examine how targeted SAF delivery could work for carriers that want to use more of the lower-carbon fuel. Brussels Airport has already carried out or tested more than 30 sustainability projects under Stargate, covering areas such as electric ground equipment and hydrogen trials. Discussions with airlines over use of the installation are continuing, and no participating carriers have been named yet.
