Australia’s Department of Defence has confirmed initial operational capability for the Royal Australian Air Force’s MQ-4C Triton and MC-55A Peregrine, while also completing the 14-aircraft P-8A Poseidon fleet and bringing the first upgraded P-8A back to Australia. The development, centred on RAAF Bases Tindal and Edinburgh, gives the service a broader mix of long-range surveillance, airborne intelligence, maritime patrol and electronic warfare assets across the country’s primary area of military interest.
The Triton provides persistent high-altitude surveillance over wide maritime areas, while the Peregrine adds airborne intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and electronic warfare capability. Together with the Poseidon fleet, the aircraft strengthen anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare coverage and improve Australia’s ability to monitor activity across the Indo-Pacific approaches.
The P-8A upgrade path includes Increment 3 Block 2 enhancements, with the first modified aircraft now in country and further work set to continue in Australia. The remaining P-8As will be upgraded domestically with industry support at the Deep Maintenance and Modification Facility at RAAF Base Edinburgh, extending local sustainment and modification work on a major defence aviation programme.
