Qantas will launch the first commercial nonstop service between Sydney and New York in mid-2028, using Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft on its Project Sunrise programme. The flight is expected to take about 18 hours and will trim more than three hours from current one-stop journey times.
Tickets for the route are due to go on sale in August 2027. The service follows the already confirmed Sydney-London nonstop route scheduled to begin in October 2027, giving Qantas two long-haul flagship links under the same programme. The Sydney-New York sector is designed for the A350-1000ULR, fitted with an extra 20,000-litre fuel tank and capable of flying more than 16,000 kilometres and up to 22 hours nonstop.
The new service will replace Qantas’s daily one-stop Sydney-New York itinerary via Auckland as the fastest option between the two cities. Qantas has not yet disclosed fares, launch-day frequency or the full cabin layout for the route.
