F-35 parts diverted to Hong Kong trigger US and Australian probes

US lawmakers and the Pentagon are investigating how a shipment of F-35 Lightning II spare parts leaving Australia for repair in the United States ended up in Hong Kong. The parts were being handled by an intermediary for Lockheed Martin when they were rerouted during transit across the Pacific, raising concerns over possible exposure of sensitive stealth-aircraft technology.

The Pentagon’s F-35 Joint Program Office confirmed it was aware of a shipment issue involving unserviceable components and was working with US authorities and industry partners to retrieve the items, investigate the incident and prevent a repeat. Reporting has suggested the cargo may have included a cockpit canopy, although that detail has not been publicly confirmed by the Pentagon.

Australian authorities have also been drawn into the case after the report surfaced, saying they protect classified defence technology and maintain robust export controls. The exact chain of custody, the reason for the diversion and the current location of the components remain unclear.
