Dresden Airport weighs smaller terminal as current building faces possible retirement

Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG is exploring a smaller new terminal for Dresden Airport, a move that could eventually take the current main building out of service. The operator is reviewing options as passenger demand remains far below the terminal’s original design capacity, with traffic expected to be only a little over 700,000 passengers this year.

MFAG chief executive Götz Ahmelmann outlined the idea in interviews with local newspapers, while a company spokesperson confirmed that no final decision has been taken. Costs, financing and the exact site for any new building are still open, and the company is treating the plan as a set of target visions and possible development paths rather than a committed project.

The current terminal was built about 25 years ago for roughly 4 million passengers, leaving Dresden with a facility that is large and expensive to maintain. Ahmelmann has argued that simply reducing the size of the existing building would be even more costly, making a purpose-built smaller terminal the more viable option. The existing structure would also require substantial renovation work.
