UK to send RAF Voyager tanker to bolster Saudi air defences

The UK will deploy an RAF Voyager tanker to support Saudi Arabia’s defensive air operations against renewed Houthi attacks, with the aircraft expected to begin refuelling missions within days. The time-limited arrangement centres on RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus and is designed to help Saudi jets stay airborne longer on patrol and interception duties.

The support follows a Saudi request for military assistance as the kingdom faces a rise in drone and missile strikes from the Iran-backed group. UK officials have framed the deployment as defensive only, limited to refuelling missions for Saudi aircraft protecting the country, rather than backing offensive strikes in Yemen. The operation is expected to last for weeks rather than days and will remain under review.

The move adds to Britain’s existing regional security role and comes amid wider instability in the Middle East. It also sits alongside earlier UK air-defence support to Saudi Arabia and follows the British contribution to coalition strikes on Houthi targets in 2024.
