Benno Beran’s Boeing Stearman remains his lifelong flying project

aeroTELEGRAPH profiles Benno Beran’s long commitment to aviation, centred on a 1940 Boeing Stearman biplane he bought as a restoration project and continued flying into later life. The 73-year-old former Austrian Airlines technical employee spent two decades bringing the aircraft back to flying condition, turning it into the personal expression of a career that never left the cockpit.

Beran’s story is set against the wider work of the Austrian Aviation Museum and its historic-aircraft community near Vienna. He and fellow enthusiast Franz List founded the museum in 1996, and the club’s fleet has grown to include two flyable Boeing Stearmans, a Bücker 131, a Schulgleiter SG 38, an experimental aircraft and several more machines awaiting restoration.

The second Stearman, registered OE-ABS, completed its official acceptance flight in May at the club’s home airfield in Bad Vöslau. The line-up underlines the continuing role of private enthusiasts and flying clubs in keeping vintage taildraggers operational rather than static museum pieces.
