Malaysia Aviation Group nears order for Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners

Malaysia Aviation Group is close to ordering about 10 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners for Malaysia Airlines, in a deal that would give the carrier its first Boeing 787s and support a long-haul fleet overhaul. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2031 if the purchase is finalised, with the aircraft set to replace seven leased Airbus A350s currently used on intercontinental routes.

The widebody competition reportedly narrowed to Boeing and Airbus, with Boeing gaining an edge through earlier delivery availability. Engine selection also favoured Boeing’s proposal, as GE Aviation offered more attractive terms than Rolls-Royce. The 787-10, the largest version of the Dreamliner family, would give Malaysia Airlines additional capacity for future growth while reducing reliance on leased aircraft.

The move would be a notable widebody win for Boeing in Southeast Asia and a significant shift in Malaysia Airlines’ fleet strategy. Malaysia Aviation Group has not publicly confirmed a final order, leaving the transaction at the near-deal stage.
