Swarm Aero unveils Gamera for U.S. Air Force large-drone requirement

Swarm Aero has unveiled Gamera, a new Group 5 uncrewed aircraft, at the Air & Space Forces Association’s Air, Space and Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Maryland. The aircraft is being pitched as a contender for the U.S. Air Force’s Massed Modular Aircraft requirement, which seeks a lower-cost replacement for the MQ-9A Reaper with heavy payload capacity and long-range reach.

Gamera is designed around long-range strike and sensing missions, with a reported unrefuelled range of about 9,000 nautical miles and payload capacity of more than 2,800 pounds across seven hardpoints. Swarm has also positioned the aircraft for carriage of weapons including LRASM and JASSM-ER, alongside modular sensing payloads.

The unveiling adds another entrant to the Air Force’s effort to field more affordable combat mass under the MMA programme. Swarm is pairing the aircraft with its Legion command-and-control software for swarm operations, while executives have described the design as intended for lower-cost, high-volume production and attritable use in contested environments. The aircraft has not been selected as the programme winner.
