Security alert at RAF Fairford after VistaJet Cessna lands at U.S. bomber base

A VistaJet Cessna 560XLS+ landed by mistake at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on 12 September, prompting a security response at the U.S.-operated base before the aircraft departed later for its intended destination, Cotswold Airport at Kemble. The jet, registered D-CJMK, arrived just after 09:00 local time and left at 12:10 after interviews and paperwork were completed. The intended field lies about 11 miles west of RAF Fairford.

The incident took place at an active U.S. Air Force site that was hosting B-1B Lancer bombers at the time, making the unauthorised civilian arrival a sensitive security matter. The pilot realised the mistake quickly and wanted to depart immediately, but base security kept the aircraft on the ground while the response was handled.

Kemble’s approaches are flown at pilot discretion, with no controller to warn crews if they line up for the wrong aerodrome. That operating environment helps explain how the confusion could occur, even though the aircraft’s actual landing at RAF Fairford triggered a formal security reaction.
