GKN Aerospace joins Sweden’s latest future combat air push with new FMV contract

Sweden’s FMV has awarded GKN Aerospace a contract worth about SEK 390 million to develop technologies for the country’s future combat air system through 2028. The work sits within the Konceptprogram Framtida Stridsflygsystem, or KFS, and supports Sweden’s planning for crewed and uncrewed combat air capability beyond 2040.

GKN’s scope covers concept studies, technology development and demonstrator activities, with a focus on advanced cooling, higher onboard electrical power, propulsion-related analysis and measures to reduce detectability. The programme brings together FMV, the Swedish Armed Forces, FOI, Saab and GKN Aerospace as Sweden looks to reduce technical risk and strengthen domestic industrial capability around its next combat air options.

Separate work under the same programme is also advancing demonstrator aircraft, including two flying platforms being developed and tested autonomously. The broader effort is intended to give Sweden a clearer basis for later decisions on the architecture of its future air combat fleet.
