Eurowings flight diverted twice after baggage loaded without a passenger

Eurowings flight EW9503 from Ibiza to Düsseldorf was diverted twice after a bag belonging to no boarded passenger was loaded on an Airbus A320, prompting a security-related response in flight. The aircraft turned first to Toulouse, the nearest suitable airport, before continuing to Cologne/Bonn when arrival in Düsseldorf slipped past the night curfew. Eurowings arranged road transport for the 156 passengers to complete the journey to Düsseldorf.

The incident began after the crew learned that the baggage error had occurred during loading. Toulouse handled the first unscheduled landing, while Cologne/Bonn became the fallback because it operates around the clock and can accept arrivals outside Düsseldorf’s overnight restrictions.

The case highlights how even a single baggage handling mistake can ripple through an operation, creating additional delays and forcing an airline to rely on alternate airports and ground transport to recover the schedule.
