Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces targeted two gas-processing facilities in Russia’s Yamalo-Nenets region on 9 September, in what multiple reports describe as the deepest Ukrainian drone strike of the war. The facilities were the Novy Urengoy Gas Condensate Treatment Plant and the Purovsky Gas Processing Plant, both in western Siberia more than 3,000 km from the Ukrainian border.
The operation extends Kyiv’s long-range drone campaign into Russia’s Arctic gas heartland, an area previously viewed as a secure rear for energy infrastructure. Ukrainian officials linked the strike to FP-1 drones produced by Fire Point, while regional governor Dmitry Artyukhov reported a fire at an industrial site and said there were no fatalities or injuries.
The claimed range has not been independently verified, and the exact flight path remains unconfirmed. Even so, the attack points to a further increase in Ukraine’s reach against Russian energy assets, after earlier long-range strikes had reached other northern and eastern targets. Reporting from the region also described smoke and fire at the sites, with damage assessments still under way.
