Germany clears Emirates for fifth destination at Berlin BER

Germany has approved additional traffic rights for Emirates to begin serving Berlin-Brandenburg Airport, giving the Dubai carrier a fifth destination in the country alongside Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf and Hamburg. The decision allows up to seven flights a week and excludes fifth-freedom services beyond Dubai, clearing the way for a direct long-haul link from BER.

The move follows years of lobbying by Emirates for access to the capital’s airport and was unveiled during the state visit of the United Arab Emirates president to Berlin. Berlin officials welcomed the new route as a direct connection to Dubai and a stronger long-haul option for the capital region. Transport minister Steffen Bilger linked the decision to the bilateral air services framework and confirmed the weekly frequency cap.

A launch timetable has not yet been published in the available official material. The approval also revives competition concerns in Germany’s aviation market, where Lufthansa-side commentary has long opposed wider Emirates access to Berlin and other points in the country.
