Germany has agreed to add a fifth point to the route schedule for a UAE national carrier, opening the way for Emirates to begin services to Berlin while keeping its existing four German destinations capped at current frequency levels. The move, confirmed during the UAE president’s state visit to Germany, would give the Dubai airline another long-haul link into the German market without increasing flights at Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf or Hamburg.
The joint understanding allows a fixed number of frequencies to the new point, which industry reporting on Thursday placed at up to seven flights a week and without third-country traffic rights from that fifth destination. Berlin’s government framed the decision as enabling daily Emirates flights at BER, making the capital the practical beneficiary of the agreement. That interpretation is consistent with long-running efforts by the carrier to secure access to Berlin, a market it has sought for years alongside Stuttgart.
The arrangement leaves the broader Germany-UAE traffic-rights framework intact for the airline’s existing gateways while creating room for an additional German destination. It also follows earlier Emirates planning for Berlin, including preparations for daily wide-body operations, as the capital region looks set to gain a direct long-haul connection to Dubai.
