NBAA panel urges closer coordination between flight operations and security teams

NBAA used an Aug. 27 News Hour webinar to press for tighter coordination between flight operations and security teams across business aviation missions, with panelists calling for shared trip planning, unified threat intelligence and clear decision-making authority. The discussion centred on how operators can better protect aircraft, crews and key employees by aligning flight departments and security staff from the earliest stages of mission planning and throughout the trip.

Panelists stressed that the two functions should no longer work in parallel silos. Once an aircraft is airborne, flight operations should take the lead if a problem emerges, while security teams remain plugged into the same communication flow before departure and in flight. A shared platform for intelligence was one of the recommended tools for keeping all stakeholders informed.

The webinar also highlighted practical security checks extending beyond the aircraft itself, including vetting transportation providers, fixed-base operators, hotels and other vendors involved in a trip. Regular in-person meetings and joint emergency-response drills were presented as ways to build common terminology, clarify back-ups and contact trees, and define required actions before a disruption affects mission continuity.
