SPD parliamentary group deputy leader Armand Zorn has rejected additional flight rights for Emirates in Germany, stepping into a live policy dispute over whether the Gulf carrier should gain broader access to German airports. He argued that any expansion of market access must first be assessed for competition conditions and the impact on German companies and workers.
Zorn warned that extra traffic rights should not shift traffic and value creation away from Germany or add pressure on German hubs and feeder connections. The comments come as the federal government faces renewed scrutiny over how far it is prepared to open the market to Emirates, which already serves Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf and Hamburg.
The issue has become a broader aviation and industrial policy question in Germany, with concerns centred on hub traffic, competitive balance and the economic role of domestic airports. Separate reporting had indicated earlier in the week that compromise options were still being discussed, including additional weekly rotations and a possible new German destination, but no final decision has been confirmed.
