Finavia has completed the renewal of the air traffic area at Tampere-Pirkkala Airport in Finland, including the replacement of the approach lighting system at the eastern end of the runway. The planned EUR 1.1 million project was finished on schedule during the summer, with work carried out without disrupting scheduled traffic at the regional airport.
The upgraded approach lighting system extends 900 metres and comprises 50 light masts, 136 lighting units and 182 light sources. Around 12 kilometres of electrical cables were replaced as part of the works, which Finavia treats as a key element of safe operations in darkness and low visibility.
The renovation involved about 20 people employed by local companies alongside Finavia’s own network of contractors. Old lighting units and cables were recycled, while some of the removed masts will be reused elsewhere in Finavia’s airport network.
