A Hellenic Air Force F-4E Phantom II crashed during a flying display at Athens Flying Week 2026 at Tanagra Air Base, northeast of Athens, killing both crew members. The aircraft was from the 338th Squadron of the 117th Fighter Wing and went down during a display flight near the 114th Fighter Wing area, while spectators watched the annual airshow.
The service identified the dead as First Lieutenant (I) I.M. and First Lieutenant (I) D.P. The aircraft had completed a rehearsal flight the previous day. No injuries were reported among spectators, although the crash sparked a major emergency response and evacuation measures around the base.
The cause has not been determined. A competent Hellenic Air Force committee will investigate the accident, which occurred during a low-altitude manoeuvre at the event rather than on a routine training sortie.
