Qatar Airways monitors Russian airspace safety after Ukraine warning

Qatar Airways is monitoring the safety situation in Russian airspace after Ukraine warned airlines that intensified drone operations are making the skies over Russia increasingly unsafe. The carrier has not announced any suspension or route change on its Russia services, but it is reviewing airspace security, safety assessments and geopolitical developments as it plans operations.

Passenger and crew safety remains the airline’s top priority, with flight planning guided by continuous monitoring of available information. Qatar Airways has indicated that it will adapt operations if needed and communicate any significant updates through its official channels.

The warning from Kyiv came as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described Russian airspace as completely unsafe for airlines, and Ukraine later formally notified the International Civil Aviation Organization of the risk. The issue is particularly relevant for Gulf carriers such as Qatar Airways, which still use Russian airspace or operate flights to Russia, unlike most Western airlines that have avoided the route since 2022. Aviation safety coverage on Wednesday also highlighted ongoing conflict-zone warnings from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency for parts of the region.
