Swiss A330 diverts to St. John’s after medical emergency on LX14 New York flight

Swiss diverted an Airbus A330 operating flight LX14 from Zurich to New York to St. John’s, Newfoundland, after a passenger suffered a medical emergency on board. The crew set transponder code 7700 during the Atlantic crossing, and the aircraft landed in Canada before continuing to its destination after the passenger was handed over to medical care and the jet refuelled.

The unscheduled stop disrupted a long-haul transatlantic service but did not point to a wider safety issue. Swiss treated the event as a medical incident and coordinated the diversion with local air traffic control, while ground medical teams in St. John’s stood by for the affected traveller.

The Airbus A330 had departed Zurich for New York JFK with 234 passengers on board. Code 7700 is the standard general emergency signal in aviation and can cover a range of situations, including medical events, without indicating the exact nature of the problem. Newfoundland remains a key diversion point for North Atlantic traffic, especially on eastbound and westbound services crossing the ocean.
