BER Terminal 1 reopened after precautionary evacuation disrupts flights

Berlin Brandenburg Airport’s Terminal 1 was evacuated on Thursday evening after a woman reported a suspicious substance, but police later gave the all-clear and flight operations were moving back to normal on Friday. The precautionary response caused delays and a few cancellations, while departures and arrivals continued to be handled at the airport, with Terminal 2 absorbing part of the processing load.

Airport staff cleared the public area of Terminal 1 while security checks were under way, and aircraft that were already prepared were allowed to depart. Incoming flights were still able to land during the incident, limiting the operational impact to a partial disruption rather than a full shutdown. Some reports also pointed to temporary pressure on the rail connection to the airport during the evening.

By Friday morning, the airport had reopened Terminal 1 and residual disruption had eased. One report estimated about 30 delayed flights during the incident, though the overall flight programme remained broadly intact as BER worked through the backlog.
