China Eastern Airlines has put into operation a widebody aircraft maintenance hangar in Shanghai, opening what is described as Asia’s largest facility of its kind in the city’s Lin-gang Special Area. The site is designed to handle nine widebody aircraft and two narrowbody aircraft at the same time, giving the carrier and its maintenance arm a major new base for in-house and third-party MRO work.
The hangar sits in the Yangshan Special Comprehensive Bonded Zone and is linked by an extension taxiway from Pudong Airport’s fifth runway, supporting one-stop maintenance services for airlines using Shanghai as a hub. Its scale, with a floor area of about 46,000 square metres and a depth of 146 metres, places it among the world’s few large-span, deep widebody hangars.
The opening came alongside the unveiling of Donghang Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (Shanghai) Co., China Eastern’s maintenance subsidiary. The company has outlined a longer-term capacity plan to 2030 that includes 10 widebody lines, two narrowbody lines and one dedicated paint line, positioning the site as part of a broader push to expand bonded MRO services for international customers flying through Shanghai.
