Japan’s FDMA orders first Airbus H160 for disaster response fleet

Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency has ordered its first Airbus H160, with the helicopter to be based in Kumamoto prefecture in Kyushu to support emergency response, aerial reconnaissance and disaster intelligence gathering. The acquisition expands the agency’s fleet as Japan prepares for major natural disasters, including a possible Nankai Trough megaquake.

Airbus positioned the H160 as a next-generation helicopter with a low acoustic footprint, advanced avionics and strong high-altitude performance. The aircraft will be used for rapid visual assessment during emergencies, giving FDMA a wider reach across the country’s disaster response network.

The order adds to the H160’s public-sector presence in Japan, where four aircraft of the type are already in service with law enforcement, news-gathering and municipal firefighting operators. For Airbus, the deal extends the model’s footprint in civil and emergency missions in one of the company’s key Asian markets.
