Greece has signed a contract to acquire three Embraer KC-390 Millennium military transport aircraft, with an option for three more. Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias and Portuguese Defence Minister Nuno Melo formalised the government-to-government agreement in Athens on 2 November. The first aircraft is scheduled to arrive in 2027. The deal gives Greece a new platform for military airlift and air-to-air refuelling, although no contract value has been disclosed.
Portugal is acting as Greece’s procurement partner; the Portuguese government approved the acquisition in October. The option for three additional aircraft is not a firm order, and no detailed delivery schedule beyond the first aircraft’s planned arrival has been made public.
The KC-390s are intended to support Greece’s transport requirements and provide an air-to-air refuelling capability for its fighter fleet. The aircraft is also intended to improve interoperability with NATO and allied forces. Greece becomes the seventh European country to select the type, after Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic and Sweden.
