Singapore Airlines to buy up to 4,800 tonnes of SAF from Aether

Singapore Airlines has signed an agreement to purchase up to 4,800 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel from Aether Beacon over three years, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2028. The fuel is to be made at Project Beacon, a facility under development at Aster’s refining complex on Pulau Bukom, Singapore. SIA is the first airline to contract for fuel from the project and the first to buy SAF made for it from waste-carbon feedstocks.

Project Beacon is planned to use Aether’s Aurora technology, which applies the Fischer–Tropsch process to convert feedstocks such as biomethane and industrial waste gases into liquid aviation fuel. The route differs from HEFA production, which relies on lipid-based feedstocks. The companies say the fuel will be certified under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).

The binding agreement builds on a memorandum of understanding signed by the companies in 2025. It gives the planned facility a customer commitment, but no price, minimum purchase quantity or detailed delivery schedule has been disclosed. Project Beacon’s production start date is also unconfirmed.

Aether plans to start up a large-scale commercial plant by 2031, with capacity at least ten times that of Project Beacon. SIA has linked its SAF procurement to its ambition of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
