Volotea is moving to cut costs by shrinking its fleet from 44 aircraft to 30-35 and trimming about 50 jobs at its Barcelona headquarters as it negotiates a restructuring of long-term debt with creditors and Spain’s SEPI. The airline is also seeking new payment terms on a 200 million euro state-backed loan due in 2029, after citing about 150 million euros of extra fuel costs.
The downsizing is expected to focus mainly on Airbus A320 aircraft, with some operational bases also likely to be affected, although no specific routes or stations have been identified. Talks are expected to conclude in December, alongside a broader financial package that also includes a capital increase. Volotea has framed the plan as a bid to strengthen its balance sheet and support continued operations after a period of higher energy costs and weaker margins.
