Transport Canada Approves Skandia Soundproofing Kit for Challenger 600 Series

Transport Canada Civil Aviation has granted final approval for Skandia Inc.’s acoustic soundproofing kit for Bombardier Challenger 600-series business jets. The approval, announced during NBAA-BACE in Las Vegas, enables Canadian operators, maintenance providers and completion centres to install the treatment, which Skandia says reduces average cabin noise by 3.1 dB(SIL) from the forward to the aft cabin.

The approval extends the kit’s existing regulatory status with the US Federal Aviation Administration and European Union Aviation Safety Agency, whose operators have been eligible to install it since 2022. The package is now approved for Challenger 600-series aircraft under all three authorities.

Skandia offers the system as an à la carte package, allowing operators to select among skin damping, floor damping and carpet padding, thermal-acoustic insulation bags, and an overframe blanket. The company engineered and tested the treatments using its own acoustic materials and describes the added weight as minimal.

The turnkey kit is supplied with installation schematics and instructions, enabling Canadian MROs and completion centres to tailor work to an aircraft’s configuration, the operator’s budget and its maintenance schedule. Skandia’s flight-test results indicate that the 3.1 dB reduction roughly halves cabin sound energy, although the company has not disclosed installation costs or the specific aircraft configurations used for testing.
