Airports of Thailand plans to double Suvarnabhumi Airport’s annual passenger capacity to 120 million, with a southern terminal and fourth runway among the proposed projects. The operator expects both to be completed within six to seven years. The plan is to be submitted to Thailand’s Cabinet alongside the East Expansion project; the terminal and runway remain proposals, not approved or completed works.
Suvarnabhumi, Thailand’s main international airport, has a stated annual capacity of about 60 million passengers: 45 million at the main terminal and 15 million at the SAT-1 satellite terminal. AOT reported around 64 million passengers in fiscal 2026, above that capacity.
The East Expansion is further advanced. Its terms of reference are prepared, procurement is expected to begin in 2027, and construction is scheduled to take four years. The project will expand passenger service areas, including check-in and baggage-handling facilities, to accommodate at least 10 million passengers annually.
AOT president Paweena Jariyathitipong said the operator would submit the latest airport development plan to the Cabinet. The combined programme, including the East Expansion, is intended to raise annual capacity to 120 million passengers. AOT has said its investment plans are designed to meet demand while limiting additional borrowing and pressure on public funds.
