South Africa’s Cabinet has approved a new process to find a strategic equity partner for South African Airways, reviving efforts to bring private capital and aviation expertise into the carrier after the collapse of the earlier Takatso transaction. The Department of Transport will lead the process, which is intended to support fleet renewal, route growth and a stronger balance sheet for the Pretoria-based airline.
The fresh search follows years of debate over SAA’s ownership structure after the group emerged from business rescue and the previous privatisation plan fell apart. The government wants a transparent, competitive process that reduces future fiscal exposure while improving the airline’s long-term commercial prospects. No details have been disclosed on the size of any share sale, valuation, timetable or investor criteria.
SAA supports the shareholder-led process and is remaining silent on the next steps while the transport department handles the file. The outcome could determine whether the national carrier secures new funding and operational expertise needed to compete more effectively in regional and long-haul markets.
