Skytraders and the Australian Antarctic Division have completed a rare midwinter medical evacuation from McMurdo Station in Antarctica to Christchurch, New Zealand, using an Airbus A319 in one of the harshest operating environments in aviation. The flight, carried out after an urgent request from the U.S. Antarctic Program, departed Hobart, landed at McMurdo in near-total darkness and continued to Christchurch with the patient for medical care.
The mission took place during the Antarctic winter, when rescue options are extremely limited and long-range specialist aviation support is often the only practical response to a serious medical emergency. Temperatures along the route reportedly fell to minus 43C, while the aircraft worked through a narrow weather window to complete the transfer.
The aircraft involved was VH-VHD, Snowbird 1. The operation drew on coordination between Australian, US and New Zealand partners, including support from the New Zealand Defence Force, and reflected the preparation required for rare winter evacuations in the Antarctic region. The patient’s identity and medical condition were not disclosed publicly.
