Rheinmetall is planning a technology centre in Neuss focused on artificial intelligence, digitalisation and satellite technology, with local officials expecting the project to become a major driver of jobs in the North Rhine-Westphalia city. The centre is expected to bring about 500 scientists to the site, alongside a reported investment of around 250 million euros, while the group’s nearby production footprint is also set to expand.
The project forms part of Rheinmetall’s wider move deeper into defence production and high-tech development. The planned centre would sit near the company’s existing facility and the harbour area, linking research more closely with manufacturing in the same district. Local coverage suggests the adjacent production site could add roughly 700 employees, with the broader high-tech defence ecosystem in Neuss potentially growing into a cluster of 5,000 to 6,000 people over time.
Mayor Rainer Breuer and Rheinmetall chief executive Armin Papperger have both been involved in discussions around the project, which local authorities believe could strengthen Neuss as an economic and scientific hub and attract further suppliers to the region. The concrete implementation is still being worked out, and the build-out timetable has not yet been fixed.
