Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Authority is preparing to introduce RFID baggage-tracking technology across the country’s airports in a move aimed at reducing missing, delayed and misrouted luggage. The system is intended to replace barcode-based handling and give airlines and passengers real-time tracking from check-in through final reclaim, while aligning baggage oversight more closely with IATA Resolution 753.
Michael Achimugu, the NCAA’s director of public affairs and consumer protection, outlined the plan at a stakeholder forum in Lagos on Tuesday. The authority wants the shift to improve traceability, cut baggage mishandling and strengthen accountability across domestic and international terminals.
The proposal addresses a persistent operational problem in African aviation, where short-landed and delayed bags remain a common source of passenger complaints. No rollout timetable, airport-by-airport deployment plan, budget details or procurement process has been disclosed, and it is not yet clear whether the authority will begin with a pilot programme before a wider launch.
