Milan Malpensa Airport was officially renamed for Silvio Berlusconi at a ceremony at Terminal 1 in Somma Lombardo on Friday, with the new name unveiled before Italian government and transport figures and members of the Berlusconi family. The change follows the formal decision by the aviation authority and ends a long dispute over the naming of Italy’s second-busiest airport, while passenger operations remain unchanged.
The dedication drew Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Senate President Ignazio La Russa and Lombardy governor Attilio Fontana, alongside family members including Paolo Berlusconi and Marina Berlusconi. A plaque was unveiled at the airport as the public ceremony put the new identity into use.
The renaming had been delayed by legal challenges from local authorities, but court rulings earlier this year cleared the way for the dedication. For travellers, the operational impact is limited: the airport’s IATA code remains MXP, and routes, terminals and passenger procedures are unchanged. The new name will now appear gradually across airport communications and public branding.
