Lufthansa Group is moving to sell all 23 CRJ-900 regional jets inherited from Lufthansa CityLine while SWISS will permanently retire its nine Airbus A220-100s, narrowing its feeder fleet across Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich. The group is streamlining short-haul operations to reduce complexity and improve profitability, after Lufthansa CityLine ended operations in April. The smaller regional aircraft are being removed from the network-airline model rather than brought back into service.
The CRJ-900s are now up for sale following the shutdown of Lufthansa CityLine, which had long operated the type on feeder routes. Carsten Spohr has framed the wider fleet changes as part of a push to simplify the group’s regional operation, while SWISS CFO Till Streichert confirmed the A220-100 decision. That subfleet is being phased out rather than held in storage for a possible return.
SWISS originally flew nine A220-100s, but only four remain in active service. Three are already in storage and two are being dismantled for parts, with the remaining aircraft expected to leave the fleet by the end of 2027. The moves fit Lufthansa Group’s broader effort to standardise short-haul flying around fewer aircraft types at its main hubs.
